Day One commences with a welcome to Vaccine Virtual Days 2024 and an introduction to the co-chairs, who will detail their background and what they are most looking forward to during the four-day event. We will hear from internationally-recognised experts who will reflect on key data from the past year regarding adult health and immunisation and explain what this means for clinical practises while assessing health and social care readiness. Following these presentations, an esteemed panel of experts will delve into your questions.

UN Decade of Healthy Ageing –Where Are We and Where Are We Going?

“The United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030) is an opportunity to bring people together for 10 years of concerted, catalytic and collaborative action to improve the lives of older people, their families and their communities.”^1,2

During the second session of the day, Dr. Jane Barratt, PhD will introduce the United Nations Decade of Healthy Ageing, a global collaboration to improve the lives of older people, detailing the four action areas. Together with Dr. Jane Barratt, PhD, Dr. Lisa Menning, MSc and Dr. Sridhar Venkatapuram, BA(Hons), MSc, MPhil, PhD, FRSA, FFPH(Hon) will discuss a range of topics including immunisation through the lens of these action areas, behavioural and social drivers of vaccination and vaccination ethics from the perspective of policy makers.

Immunology and Age-Related Decline in Immunity: A Deep Dive

"As people age, their immune system declines in strength and becomes less effective, making adults aged ≥50 years more susceptible to infectious diseases and related complications."^1,2

In the final session of the day, Dr. Cedric "Jamie" Rutland, MD and Dr. Litjen “LJ” Tan, MS, PhD will take a deep dive into the immune system and how it changes during ageing, focusing on the impact a declining immune system has on age-related diseases. During the session, the speakers will provide tips on how to communicate with your patients about age-related decline in immunity.

Latest Advances in Respiratory Infectious Disease Prevention

“Infectious diseases represent some of the most serious threats to global health, with the greatest burden falling on those who are vulnerable, such as older adults.”¹

After a welcome from the co-chairs and a recount of highlights from the previous day, the first session of day two will focus on the effects age-related immune decline has on older adults' immune responses to respiratory diseases. The expert will discuss the latest research on clinical manifestations of respiratory diseases in adults, such as respiratory syncytial virus and risk factors for severe disease.

In this session, an interdisciplinary panel of experts from Canada, spanning across pharmacy, infectious disease, cardiology, and family practice, will share their clinical perspective on the importance of prioritising adult immunisation discussions across care settings, the challenges posed by the ageing immune system, and the downstream effects of vaccination that contribute to a state of healthy aging. Speakers will discuss the critical role healthcare providers play in identifying at-risk patients, facilitating discussion around vaccination with patients, and strategies to integrate this as part of routine clinical practice.

The Value of Adult Immunisation

“Vaccination can help prevent acute infection as well as long-term health complications.”^1–3

This panel presentation will highlight the value of adult immunisation. In this session, two experts from China will explore the role age and comorbidities play in increasing a patient's risk to vaccine preventable diseases. Aligned to the "Plan for a Healthy China 2030”, preventing diseases through vaccination is one of the important means to improve the health of the elderly. Speakers will describe current technologies and strategies to overcome barriers in adult immunisation, such as mounting a lasting immune response, and to improve vaccine coverage. The goal of this session is to highlight the value of adult immunisation and current disease burden of vaccine-preventable diseases, through the lens of experts from China.

The Role of Vaccines in Addressing
Antimicrobial Resistance

Loss of drug-effectiveness because of antimicrobial resistance is increasing in both developing and developed countries. If this trend continues unchecked, the world will confront a reality where many infectious diseases have “no cure and no vaccine”.¹

In this session, Dr. Ramanan Laxminarayan, PhD, MPH will explore antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the potential impact of vaccinations on this threat to global health. The panel will then discuss the key drivers of AMR in the healthcare sector and how these vary across the world, the challenges and opportunities for vaccination to support the agenda to overcome AMR, and how healthcare providers play a critical role in combatting AMR.
